Subject to Change

More than ever, we are subject to change. Society is evolving at a record pace. As individuals we’re trying to keep up, and our greatest fear is losing influence over the forces that govern our lives. We want to know what we can do to nudge the trajectory of change, even just a little bit, toward the world we want to see.

Last Year's Speakers

TEDxSoMa 2017 highlighted stories from people who have taken control over some force in their lives to create positive change for themselves and others.

Echo Brown

There Are No Promised Lands

After a lifetime of feeling like she doesn’t belong – not in the impoverished city where she grew up, the Ivy League college she attended, nor in the concrete jungle of New York City where she lived after college – writer and storyteller Echo Brown moved to California with $100 in her bank account and big hopes. Echo imagines California will be an idyllic paradise where she will find racial harmony, like-minded people, and cute boys eager to date her. What actually happens in California is heartbreaking, unexpected, and surprisingly uplifting.

Thibault Duchemin

Don’t Silence Your Anger, Find Your Purpose With It

What if what makes you angry deep inside, has the power to actually guide you to your life purpose? Examining the unexpected depths of his frustration led Thibault Duchemin, born the only hearing person in his family, to realize that the communication barriers he’d seen growing up could be broken. Weaving empathy and technology, a fascinating quest of a lifetime to help 400 million people with hearing loss win the everyday battle to understand what people say around them.

Virgie Tovar

Lose Hate, Not Weight

Fat shaming is one of the last bastions of unchecked bias in this country. As the weight-loss industry continues to grow, so too do rates of eating disorders, body dysmorphia and food anxiety. Is this what a healthy nation looks like? Virgie Tovar, fat activist and recovering dieter, advocates hate loss over weight loss. Rather than spending our lives waiting for our elusive “goal weight”, let's start living and loving ourselves fully right now.
